The top priority of HCA’s Homes to End Homelessness Coalition is to improve the transition of mentally ill parolees into the community by increasing supportive home options The coalition decided last week to pursue this through a budget request, rather than legislation.
Budget committee staff recommended that, if we want funding for the program in the 2007-2008 budget, we need to submit the request as a budget item rather than a bill. Senator Lowenthal, who had agreed to author the bill, will put in a request to Senate Budget Subcommittee # 4, which handles prisons.
As a result of this new strategy, our lobbying efforts will focus on the members of the budget subcommittees in both houses. Zack Olmstead will lead our lobbying in Sacramento. We need you to lobby your legislators in their district, so they understand this issue is important to their constituents.
Please contact Zack if you are willing to meet with your local legislator or write a letter of support.
