Mayor Sanders Urges Support for Proposition 1C

PRESS RELEASE
City of San Diego
Published: October 16, 2006

Statewide initiative will deliver $100 million to San Diego region
for emergency shelter and housing programs and produce
2,400 affordable units and shelter space

Mayor Jerry Sanders today urged San Diego voters to support Proposition 1C—the statewide housing and emergency shelter initiative—which will be on the November 7 ballot.

What is Proposition 1C?
Proposition 1C is a $2.85 billion housing bond that will provide:
  • $1.5 billion for shelters and housing
  • $1.35 billion for roads, parks and water and sewer improvements to support communities that embrace expanding the supply of housing

How will the San Diego region benefit under Proposition 1C?
If passed by California voters in November, will provide San Diego with much needed funds to:

  • Create emergency shelters for the region’s most vulnerable residents
  • Build affordable rental homes for seniors
  • Help families buy their first homes

"Being able to tap into Proposition 1C funds will give a huge boost to our efforts to provide housing for traditionally underserved communities—namely victims of domestic violence, homeless families, seniors, the disabled, foster youth and the working poor."
-- Mayor Jerry Sanders

How much will the San Diego region receive under Proposition 1C?
The San Diego region can expect to receive more than $100 million which will allow for the:

  • Funding of emergency shelter and housing programs
  • Leveraging of more than $300 million in private, federal and local matching funds
  • Building of approximately 2,400 affordable units and emergency shelter spaces

Additionally, the San Diego region is well positioned to receive its fair share of the $1.15 billion in funding that is available to help communities build more homes closer to job centers and transit stations to help ease long-term congestion.

Proposition 46: The Predecessor to Proposition 1C:

Proposition 1C builds on the success of its predecessor, Proposition 46.

Proposition 46 brought San Diego $60 million for affordable housing projects in San Diego, and $118 million for projects throughout San Diego County.

"Proposition 46 funds have nearly dried up. We need to replenish the affordable housing funds that are so desperately needed not only here in San Diego, but throughout the state. That is why I’m urging San Diego voters to support Proposition 1C."
