For the first time in nearly 50 years, California is on the brink of building for the future. But it will take your vote to make it happen.
Don't be discouraged that 13 propositions are on the Nov. 7 ballot. Instead, focus on the five bond measures that are aimed at ensuring our state has the infrastructure backbone it needs for the 21st century. The bond measures -- Propositions 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E and 84 -- will fund important transportation, housing, school, water, park and flood protection projects. These are as forward thinking as the state's freeway and water projects from a half-century ago. With the state's population growing by about 500,000 people annually, they are absolutely necessary......Proposition 1C: Housing and shelter
Opponents argue that the state should not be in the housing business. But the housing market is so out of control in California that the state must help some of our low-income residents. This measure would provide $2.85 billion for battered-women's shelters, low-income senior housing, home ownership assistance for the disabled, veterans and working families. Nearly half of the funds would go toward providing water, sewage and environmental cleanup for housing sites in downtown areas.
